Working Our Way To Washington!

We continue our way across the country to Washington State.  If we were really driving,  it would take us 50+ hours to get to the Northwestern most point in the contiguous United States...it's days like these I am thankful for airplanes and in our case - the internet!  Washington is the only state to be named after a president and has more glaciers that the other 47 contiguous states combined.  Washington is home to the Microsoft Corporation and Bill Gates, the wealthiest man in America.   It is also home to lots of internet based companies:  Amazon.com, Classmates.com, Whitepages.com, and Marchex, just to name a few.

Washington is also home to the first revolving restaurant, the oldest operating gas station, the first soft-serve ice cream machine, and of course, Starbucks!  The percentage of non-religious people in Washington is the highest of any state, and church membership is among the lowest of all states - obviously it's not in the Bible Belt!  Washington is a state that would be fun to visit and play - Pictionary, Pickle-ball, and Cranium were all created there.  On an entirely different note, Washington is the largest producer of apples in the USA- hence today's recipe!

Washington State Apple Pie:

6 cups of Washington apples
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar - packed
3 tablespoons flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg - freshly ground
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon salt
2 pie crusts - store bought is fine!

Wash apples,

Peel,

Cut off top and bottom of the apples, this will allow for easier slicing.

Slice to desired thickness and place in mixing bowl.

Add white sugar,

Brown sugar,

Flour,

Cinnamon,

Ground nutmeg (I used a Micro plane), and add to bowl,

Ginger and salt.

Mix well with your hands!

Put bottom pie crust in a deep dish pie dish.

Add apples on top.

Lay out the top layer of pie crust,

Tuck the top under the bottom crust.

Pinch them together...Make it pretty or just use the tines of a fork.

Add some slits - I like to personalize ours with an A.

Bake at 450° for 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 350°; bake 35-45 minutes longer or until golden brown.

Let cool for at least 30 minutes.  Chad likes his with ice cream, I like mine without.  Eat yours whichever way makes you happiest...enjoy!
